15 Time With My Queens
Rruk
One lunar cycle later, I gather Eve, Bella and the ponton she loves so much. We take a fighter up to visit Mira on the Raspian. Our fighters are round and composed of reinforced metal. However, the interior is covered with a thin film that displays what the sensors on the outside of the ship pick up. Bella and my heartâs song, Eve, are both thrilled to be flying in such a sleek and powerful vessel.
Eve exclaims with enthusiasm, âThis is amazing. Itâs like the walls are made of glass.â
âYet they are not.â I glance over my shoulder at her smiling face. Iâve explained how our fighters are designed and she knows full well how the interior viewing screens operate.
Eve just laughs at my gentle reprimand. âI know. Canât I just admire the technology?â
Turning back around, I continue flying towards our ship. âYou can admire this impressive fighter or anything else in your visual range.â Since I am sitting right in front of her, she well knows that I mean myself.
Her cheerful voice sounds off; only I can hear the warm undercurrent, and it tugs my emotions. âI think you know that I like it all.â
I smile because she is happy enough to make the human flirt with an awkward warrior like myself. I glance over my other shoulder to capture a better glimpse of Bella. She has lifted the ponton to see the stars twinkling in the darkness. His wings are wrapped around her arms and anchoring his small body to hers. His tail is whipping back and forth because he loves stars more than anything else. Seeing real ones always spikes his excitement. I remember how Pern lets him lay in the portal in his quarters so the little creature can watch the stars to his heartâs content.
Increasing speed, I speak to the crew of the Raspian. âFighter R-One requesting permission to land.â
Talonâs chipper voice sounds off. âR-One cleared to land in fighter bay twelve.â
I canât help but tease my friend. âSince when does a commander manage our coms, Talon?â
âThatâs Commander Talon to you, Rruk.â I can almost see the proud male preening in my mindâs eye. âOur com officer is tending to the needs of his new queen. It is an honor to take his place at the coms for a few microns.â
My respect for Talon doubles in an instant. âWe will remember your kindness when you have a queen of your own to tend.â
âSee that you do. I plan to put my queen before all else. Safe landing, my friend.â
I cut speed and drift slowly into the fighter bay, carefully lowering the small craft into its assigned space. I exit the craft and turn to lift Queen Bella down first. Her ponton jumps down in one gigantic leap. Pontons flutter their delicate wings when they jump, enabling them to always land on their feet. Bella chases after the overactive creature as I reach up to lift Queen Eve from the doorway. She is slightly heavier and much healthier since I became her protector.
